Getting out in our natural environment is without doubt my favourite thing to do. It creates a sense of calm, allows us to connect with those closest to us and provides endless opportunities to learn something new.
Here are my five favourite ways to immerse ourselves into our natural environments, explore them, educate ourselves about them and create life long memories along the way.
- Take a walk in a National Park – Australia is home to over 1000 national parks. Walking is the easiest way to explore these protected environments. Walks range from super easy and short to longer overnight treks. Choose one that suits you, but I challenge you to stop and read at least one information board along the way.
- Camp overnight – There are plenty of tent, caravan, swag or glamping options. Leave all the devices at home. For us, nothing resets our mind and bodies better than a good old fashioned camp out.
- Discover a waterfall – Always magic to find the waterfall at the end of a track. Discover one close to you and check out how the vegetation changes as you get closer to the water.
- Go on a rocky shoreline adventure – We often overlook the rocky headlands along our coastlines. These environments are one of the harshest you will find. The creatures here must be prepared to be left out in the sun, inundated with salty water and bombarded with extreme wave force on a daily basis. Take a walk at low tide and see if you can figure out how these animals have adapted to living in this environment.
- Paddle a lake or river – You can’t beat the peacefulness of being on the water in a non-motorised craft. A great way to explore our waterways from a different perspective. Watch the different techniques birds use to find food. Are they diving under the water, waiting in the trees or scratching in the sand?
